Optional extra About 5 minutes

Voice chat setup

Proximity voice chat lets you hear people near you in the world, quieter as they walk away. It’s completely optional — text chat works exactly the same and nobody will bug you about it.

First — can you use it?

Yes

Java Edition on Windows, Mac, or Linux.

This is the version you buy from minecraft.net and launch from the Minecraft Launcher.

Not supported

Bedrock Edition — phone, tablet, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and the “Minecraft” app from the Microsoft Store.

Bedrock can’t install mods, so voice chat isn’t possible there. Everything else on the server works normally for you.

Playing on Bedrock and feeling left out? Don’t. Plenty of people on the server use text chat only, by choice. You are not missing anything you need.

The easy way Recommended

Option 1 — the Modrinth App

A free launcher that installs the mod for you. Nothing to drag, no folders to find. If you’ve never installed a mod before, use this one.

Step 1

Install the Modrinth App

Download it from modrinth.com/app and sign in with the same Microsoft account you use for Minecraft.

Step 2

Get the BHAM MC pack

Download our pack file, then in the Modrinth App choose Add instance → From file and pick it.

Download the pack

It’s one mod — Simple Voice Chat, built for Minecraft 26.1.2. Nothing else is bundled, and nothing changes how the game plays.

Step 3

Launch it and join

Press play on the new instance, then Multiplayer → Add Server and enter play.bhammc.net. Leave the port blank.

The manual way

Option 2 — Fabric, by hand

Use this if you already have a modded setup, or you’d rather not install another launcher.

Step 1

Install Fabric

Get the installer from fabricmc.net. Run it, choose Minecraft 26.1.2, and click Install. Reopen the Minecraft Launcher and pick the new fabric-loader profile.

Step 2

Drop in the mod

Download Simple Voice Chat 2.6.21 for 26.1.2 — make sure it says fabric and 26.1.2.

Put the .jar into your mods folder:

  • Windows — press Win+R, type %appdata%\.minecraft\mods
  • Mac~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods
  • Linux~/.minecraft/mods

If there’s no mods folder, make one with exactly that name.

The version has to match on both sides. Our server runs Simple Voice Chat 2.6.21 on Minecraft 26.1.2. A mod built for a different Minecraft version will either refuse to load or connect without any voice.

Your first time in game

When you join with the mod installed, a message appears in chat saying voice chat needs setting up.

Do this

Press V and follow the guide

A setup wizard walks you through three things:

  • Pick your microphone
  • Pick your speakers or headset
  • Choose push-to-talk (hold a key to speak) or voice activation (it hears you talk)

If you choose push-to-talk, you’ll be asked to pick a key — there is no default one. If you choose voice activation, drag the sensitivity slider until the bar moves when you speak but not when you don’t.

The keys

KeyWhat it does
VOpens voice chat settingsWhere you change your mic, volume, and everything else
MMute your microphoneOnly works if you chose voice activation
NTurn voice chat off entirelyYou can’t hear them, they can’t hear you
HHide the voice chat iconsUseful for screenshots

Nobody has to use this. Press N any time you want out. Nobody on this server is allowed to pressure you into voice chat — that’s rule 7, and we mean it.

When it doesn’t work

Almost every problem is one of these five.

“Voice chat is not connected”

Voice runs over a separate connection to normal Minecraft traffic, so the game can work perfectly while voice doesn’t.

  • On mobile data or a VPN? That’s the usual cause — many block the type of traffic voice chat uses. Try normal Wi-Fi.
  • School or work network? These almost always block it. Nothing you can change from your end.
  • Otherwise, restart Minecraft first. If it still fails, tell us in Discord — if it’s our end we want to know.
My microphone doesn’t work
  • Press VSelect Microphone and check the right device is chosen. If you have a headset and a webcam, the game often picks the wrong one.
  • Use the microphone test button on that screen — it tells you instantly whether the game hears you.
  • If you chose voice activation, your mic is muted until you speak loudly enough. Lower the sensitivity threshold.
  • Check your operating system lets Minecraft use the microphone. On Windows that’s Settings → Privacy → Microphone; on Mac, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
I can’t hear anyone else
  • Press VSelect Speaker and pick your actual headset or speakers.
  • Use the sound test button on that screen to confirm.
  • Check you haven’t pressed N, which switches voice chat off completely.
  • Remember it’s proximity voice — people who are far away are meant to be silent. Stand next to someone to test.
Minecraft freezes for about 30 seconds when I join

Usually a microphone permission problem at the operating system level, most often on Linux when Minecraft was installed through Snap. Grant microphone access to the launcher, then restart your computer.

The mod won’t load at all
  • Check you’re launching the fabric-loader profile, not plain Minecraft. This catches almost everybody once.
  • Check the file is the fabric build for 26.1.2. Forge and NeoForge builds won’t work on Fabric.
  • Check the .jar is directly inside mods, not in a folder inside it.

Still stuck? Ask in our Discord. Say which operating system you’re on, which option you tried, and what the error said. Somebody will help — this catches everyone the first time.
